The heat and humidity are not condusive to the training atmosphere….it’s extremely hard to motivate yourself to go out and check the mail, let alone take a long walk! If you don’t go as early as 5am, or as late as 7pm….you will end up with bloated little vienna sausage fingers, and a hot red face from the heat (at least those are my 2 signs that it is unbearable!). Anyone got any motivation for me, because I am not interested in getting up at 5am !
My oldest is a sweet kid. Really, a lot of people say that about their kids, but she really is. When she was 5 or 6, she had a birthday party and decided she had enough “stuff” (her birthday is very close to Christmas) and asked all of her friends to bring a donation for the pregnancy center at our church.
She’s been training with me, and fundraising for me for my 3 day walk. I don’t think I’ve be where I am financially if it weren’t for her - people actually pass me by to put money in her bucket when we’re out fundraising. She’s stood for hours with me on a hot sidewalk in front of the grocery store asking for money, and never complained. She willingly wakes up at 7am on a weekend to go on training walks with me. She’s done as many as 10 miles with me, so that I could have company on a walk!
But this weekend she did something that really touched me. We were all talking at dinner about my next fundraiser, and how I’m only $500+ away from my $2200+ goal now. After dinner, she disappeared into her room and then came back holding $10 she had earned from babysitting. She handed it to me and said,
“This is a donation for you, Mommy!”
I smiled and told her that it was ok, she could keep her money for a new shirt or a movie she wanted, but thank you anyway!
She handed it back to me and said, “No, you need to make your goal - YOU take it!”
I almost cried. I led her to the computer so that she could make the donation online. In her entry on my 3 day donation website she wrote:
In support of my mom, good luck finding a cure.
And that is the best donation I’ve gotten so far. However, that’s not to say I won’t accept yours
Feel free to head over to my official 3 day website and throw some money into the pot - ever little bit helps!
I finally made my donations to myself from my last 2 fundraisers. I’m now only $635 away from my $2200 goal. My husband offered to let me work the sidewalk in front of his store this weekend, and provided I can find childcare, I’m going to be there. His store is always busy during holiday weekends, so maybe I’ll be able to grab a piece of the action. My goal is to be completely done fundraising by my birthday (July 28th) so I’m well on my way to being there.
It’s hot. And humid. And walking in this weather STINKS!!! (Literally, cause you’ve got major B.O. after you’re outside in this!)
After walking around in this fine June weather, I’m confident that we made the right choice by deciding to do the 3 day in Philly. Yes, I’ll have to spend money on airfare and such, but my comfort is worth it!
Just did 2.4 miles around the ‘hood with my mom and the girls. It was so humid out I had to shower when I got home - blech.
Now I’ve got to get my hiney in bed so I can get up for my 8 mile walk tomorrow morning!
I got 2 tanks for the walk today at Target, made by Champion, with some special fabric that “wicks” sweat away from your body. (I got the special panties made from the same stuff too - no one needs a sweaty butt). I’m going to try the stuff out this Saturday when I do an 8 mile training walk. The walk is only one exit up from my house, how nice is that? It’ll be my first time walking on the trail here…there are some gentle rolling hills which will be a switch from the flat surfaces I’ve trained on so far. The walk starts at 7:30am, so hopefully it won’t be too stinkin’ hot by the time we’re done.
I met another local mom (online of course!) in my new town and she expressed an interest in walking with me, and right now, what I need is someone to keep me accountable. We planned for tonight all week and then it seemed like the rain would keep us from walking, but we decided to go for it anyway. We got a bit wet, but we did 3 loops around my neighborhood for a total of 3.6 miles. She wants to walk 2 or 3 times a week with me, YAY!
This weekend we’ll be out at Publix again - this time at the Chelsea Place Plaza in New Port Richey, located at 1346 Seven Springs Blvd. I’m still $1100 away from my goal, so my fingers are crossed for a great turn out. If you’re in the area, come out and say hello - we’ll be there both Saturday and Sunday.
I did 10 miles Saturday morning with Dana. We started at 7am, as it is so hot here already…. by 10am it was 87 degrees! I had taken the past 2 weekends off training due to being out of town, and my body is feeling it! My lower back and leg muscles are sore. No more days off….I am paying for that! Thanks to the East Lake Library lady who was watering the garden and allowed me to walk up and get sprayed with the hose so I did not pass out from heat exhaustion !
