I was thinking back to my wedding this weekend, because my husband and I were on a little trip to celebrate our 11th anniversary. Unlike most people, we had our 3 month old at our wedding, and I remember trying to pump breast milk for days in advance so that I wouldn’t have to nurse her during the reception. The little stinker ended up taking a 4 hour nap during the reception - DJ and Chicken Dance and all - and didn’t drink a drop. Best laid plans, eh?
We had a rough start breastfeeding. About a week after Catherine was born, I got sick with a high fever. A quick trip back to my doctor and we discovered I had mastitis, and I was in incredible pain. A few days later I was better, but then I needed a nipple shield, because this breastfeeding thing HURT! I can see why women get frustrated and quit after a few weeks now. It’s definitely not easy, especially for a first time mom. One thing that makes it a little easier is a GOOD breast pump. I didn’t find out what “good” was til I had my third child, and I suffered with a few bad pumps prior to that. I liked the Pump In Style personally, but other women may prefer the Ameda Purely Yours or one of the Avent Pumps. As long as you like it, and it works for you, that’s all that matters. There are a lot of reviews and information online, so don’t make a quick decision when buying a breast pump. Talk to friends, get advice, and you’ll end up with one that works for you (hopefully). If not, don’t get discouraged - try again! I’m for anything that makes breastfeeding easier and keeps women at it longer!
