I found two teeny weeny ticks on Lola this weekend. I thought we were through tick season – needless to say, I’m upset. I hate the thought of ticks being on my dogs. Thankfully, these were small ticks, and not yet “engorged” on blood (eww!) but that makes the hunt that much tougher. At least Lola has short hair and I can usually pet her and find the ticks. Our lab has a THICK coat of hair and it’s darn near impossible to find ticks on her.

I’m not going to use the tick collar our vet recommended last time. I didn’t like the thought of something that is a skin and eye irritant being on my dog. My kids and I pet the dogs all the time – I didn’t want something to hurt our skin either! And it rubbed a raw spot on my poor Lab’s neck. Not to mention, the tick collars from the vet cost $17 or so EACH! I have a feeling that my vet is charging me too much for our pet medications too – I know I could get them online for less and save myself a trip to the vet’s office. I was pretty happy with the <a href=http://www.vetdepot.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=792">Frontline for fleas and ticks that we tried…yup, just confirmed it – VetDepot.com has it for half of what we paid. Now I need to go about getting Bailey’s prescription meds there too!

A UK study has revealed what I’ve known for years – owning a dog is good for you, and it’s better than owning a cat.

Now, before the cat lovers out there throw things at me – let me explain! The study found that owning a dog can prevent you from getting ill, help you to recover quickly when you do get sick, and live longer. Dogs help you to destress, and get more physical activity (due to walking your dog, playing, etc).

I’ve always owned a dog, and I’ll never be without one!

Excercising with your dog is a great way to keep both of you in shape. My sister, Cheryl, regularly takes her dog on a 1 mile walk. Our dogs aren’t quite as athletic, but we still get out and stroll around the neighborhood with them. After one lap around, my little doxie is usually struggling to keep up, but she tries her best! My sister and I know of a few dog parks in our area, and we’ve taken the dogs there to let them off leash to mix and mingle. It’s a great way for your dog to have some downtime with other dogs. If you’ve got a dog you can let off the leash, you can try the local beach for some frisbee or fetch too.

If you’re a dog lover, dog owner, or just interested in dogs, be sure to check out these Dog Forums. From dog health to dog grooming, dog training to dog pictures, they’ve got it all. The only thing missing is a board about getting your dog in shape! The forum is growing in leaps and bounds and it’s a great place to have conversation with people who love their dogs as much as you love yours. Cat lovers need not apply!

But, we’re walking!
